An oversized T-shirt should look intentional and feel comfortable through the chest, shoulders and arms. Start with garment measurements rather than buying two sizes larger than usual: a tee designed with an oversized cut already has extra room.
Measure a tee you already like
- Lay a clean T-shirt flat without stretching it.
- Measure straight across the chest from underarm to underarm. If the chart lists chest circumference, double this flat width.
- Measure the length from the high shoulder point beside the neck to the hem.
- Compare shoulder width if that measurement is available. Use the same measuring points as the retailer.
Read each size chart carefully: flat chest width and full chest circumference are different measurements. A chart entry of 44 inches for chest circumference corresponds to about 22 inches laid flat.
Three fit checks
Shoulders: a dropped shoulder seam can sit beyond your natural shoulder. It should still let you move freely.
Chest and sleeves: look for room without pulling across the chest. Sleeve length changes the silhouette, so check the product images alongside measurements.
Length: compare the hem with your trousers. Too much length can hide the proportions you wanted from the oversized cut.
Should you size down?
Choose the size whose measurements match your preferred silhouette. A smaller size may reduce chest room and length at the same time; a larger size changes both. Avoid assuming that sizing down always creates a regular fit.
